The world of social media: it has lead people to getting weird jobs. One of them is a YouTuber. A YouTuber is described as “A person who uploads, produces, or appears in videos on the video-sharing website YouTube,” says oxforddictionaries.com. I have grown up around YouTubers and the YouTube community. It has changed a lot from 2005 to 2018. The original YouTubers never started without thinking it was going to be a 9-5 job where they would get paid $2,000 per video. They started YouTube because it was a fun thing to do in their spare time. Nowadays you can make a living with YouTube, and basically become a celebrity. It’s not easy though. “So, I love creating, directing, all of it. So I didn’t get into YouTube because I wanted to be a famous YouTuber. YouTuber wasn’t even a thing. I was like, ‘I want to be a director, so I’ve got to put shit out there to show people I can direct.’” says Shane Dawson with forbes.com. Dawson has been on YouTube since 2008.
Let’s talk about the history of YouTube. Youtube was created by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim who worked at Paypal prior to that. They started the website as a video-sharing website where users could upload, share and view content. How they named the website is, the “You” comes from your content you upload, and “Tube” is a reference to monitor or screen. The site launched Monday, February 14, 2005. It did not start getting popular until the summer of 2006. YouTube was the fastest growing website on the internet, even more than MySpace. The site delivered an average of 100 million video views per day! Nowadays YouTube gets about 1 billion views a day, says videonitch.com.
The first ever YouTuber I can remember watching was a guy named Fred. Fred would make comedy videos, where he made his voice sound like a squirrel, and vlogged his day. He was the first YouTube channel to hit 1 million subscribers. (A YouTube subscriber is someone who has chosen to “follow” a channel and your content so they can stay updated with your latest videos.) That was big for the website. He was one of the first YouTubers to make a career off YouTube. After he was done with his channel, he made 3 movies, huge merch line, that was sold in Hot Topic, Target, Walmart, and Toys R Us. He hHad his own TV show on Nickelodeon, had a episode on Icarly, and went on tour.
In conclusion, being a youtuber is a weird job (to me). But there is a lot of work that goes into it. You have to think of new content ideas, you have to film it yourself, you have to edit it, and post it yourself on your channel. That sounds easy in theory but I bet that is hard and stressful. I don’t know if I could ever do it. Also it seems like there would be a lot of competition (althoughbut competition is everywhere). What do you think about YouTubers?
