I asked eighteen student about their favorite movie, band or musical artist, food, and article of clothing. This seemed like a fun and light-hearted survey to start off with, although people had a lot of trouble coming up with their favorites. I personally had a great time interviewing various students–some that I know fairly well, and others that I’ve never talked to. It was an entertaining way to branch out a bit, and somehow being forced to approach people made the task easier.
The results of my survey were quite diverse. No two people listed the same film or band, while similar but not identical types of food were listed, except on two occasions. The same articles of clothing were referenced a few times. Multiple people didn’t answer sections of the survey, usually the film or band section, because they couldn’t think of a favorite. Many who did answer all sections clarified that their answer wasn’t their absolute favorite, while others gave multiple answers.
I wasn’t familiar with a lot of the answers, particularly where music was concerned. I tried to be fairly unresponsive so as not to affect people’s answers, and I promised to keep all answers anonymous. Unfortunately, I forgot to ask the clothing question to one of my initial groups of people, but I remembered with all others.
This was a neat little survey to start with, and it really gave me a taste of the world of interviewing and journalism, no matter how trivial or minimal the questions were. In the future I think it would be intriguing to ask people more hard-hitting or political questions, now that I have a bit of practice with something more silly and straightforward. This isn’t to say that there’s no merit in an entertaining survey like this one, however.
Here are the full results of my survey (note: any results I was unsure of [either in spelling or content] I double-checked by Googling what I believed the person said. This is as accurate as I could make it, but some results may differ slightly from what the person in question intended):
All in all, I recognize about half of the movie and band results, and obviously all of the food and clothing results. This made me think about what my answers would be. When the questions are turned back to me, I realize how difficult they are to answer. Honestly, I have no idea what I’d put as my favorites!
