Peaches Christ. When you hear that name you think of a lot of things. Peaches the singer, or the fruit. Christ like Jesus. But that is not at all who I’m talking about. Peaches Christ is one of the most legendary drag artists of all times. She has made a career of herself from nothing. She went from moving to San Francisco with no money, to selling out theatres around the world! This is the story about Peaches Christ.
Joshua Grannell (aka Peaches Christ) was born on January 7, 1974 in Maryland. Since he was a kid he loved horror movies. His mother said “He would dress as Freddy Krueger all the time, not just during Halloween.” He started watching cult movies at a very young age for example: Pink Flamingos, Eraserhead, Mommie Dearest, etc. He loved watching these movies so much. He wanted to be a filmmaker he said. His parents supported him, in all of his creative ideas. They got him in theater classes, and improv. They also got him in film school, which started his drag career.
Grannell went to Penn State’s film school, where he filmed his thesis film. He needed a drag queen role in his film. The one they casted did not show up to set. So his professor said, you should step in and be the drag queen, and Peaches Christ was born. He finished film school and decided to move to San Francisco, California. He had no money, nowhere to live, no friends, and one suitcase. He started performing at a monthly drag show called T Shack.
Then Peaches and her friend Martiny decided to start their own monthly drag show celebrating the one thing they love most: Cult cinema/movies. It would be called Midnight Mass with your hostess Peaches Christ and her sidekick Martiny. It would involve a screening of a cult movie, with a drag pre show. They decided to go to talk with Landmark Theaters about the idea. Landmark hesitated but they thought the idea was interesting and unique. They said yes, so in the summer of 1998 Midnight Mass had their first show. They played the movie Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! Peaches was worried that no one would show up, or no one would do the costume contest. But they sold out the theater, and 70% of the audience came dressed up as their favorite characters from the movie. It was a success from day one. Every show just got bigger, and bigger. After a while they started inviting stars from the movies for example, Mink Stole, John Waters, Elvira, Linda Blair, and Natasha Lyonne. Midnight Mass ran for 12 years! In 2007 HDnet Films decided to produce a new reality show called Midnight Mass with Your Hostess Peaches Christ. It aired nationally, and had one season. Sadly Midnight Mass had its last show in 2009, but that was not the end for Peaches Christ.
During Midnight Mass she met a producer named Darren Stein who said “if you ever have an idea for a movie, I will produce it.” She told him “I do have an idea, we need to talk.” This lead to the start of the movie All About Evil. All About Evil is about “A mousy librarian inherits her father’s beloved but failing old movie house. In order to save the family business she discovers her inner serial killer.” The movie is known for having the best cast. Mink Stole, Natasha Lyonne, Cassandra Peterson (Elvira), and many more. The movie was released in 2010, and put Peaches Christ career to the very top. The first screening of the film was in San Francisco, California at The Castro Theatre and sold out 1,400 seats. They had a Midnight Mass style roadshow to accompany the movie. She went on a year tour with All About Evil.
After all of this, she started working events with film festivals around the world, and started her own production team called Peaches Christ Productions. Today she writes parody drag stage shows with stars from the tv show RuPaul’s Drag Race. Examples of shows are, “Return to Grey Gardens”, “Sheetlejuice”, and “Legally Black”. She goes on tour with shows to America, UK, and Australia.
Peaches Christ is one of the most legendary and hard working drag queens out there. She has come from a filmmaker to a superstar. Have you ever heard of Peaches Christ? What do you think about her?
