When just starting an instrument, whatever that instrument may be, the first steps can be very confusing. It all depends on how committed you are to learning the instrument! I mean, you can go the lessons route, and pay an instructor to teach you; but from experience, the first couple classes can be a waste of money. Though that is the easiest route, you can definitely learn the basics on your own, which is not as hard as it sounds, and I will show you one way to go about doing that.
My favorite way of beginning to learn an instrument is to do it the fun way. For stringed instruments, I just strum the strings and hold them down. Get the feel of the instrument; get to know the sounds that come from each fret or location on the fret board. For other instruments, like brass instruments, or woodwinds, it may be helpful to watch videos online on how to make sound come out of it. And for percussion instruments, just hit the damn thing. Have some fun with it! You’ll get the rhythm down soon enough.
When just starting out, listen to instrument solos, go to concerts, and really focus on the way the instrument sounds: the way it’s held, and the way said musician plays it.
When holding/ playing the instrument, don’t always go for the way that is most comfortable. The reason behind this is, even though something may seem comfortable, it could result in negative effects later on. Take drumming for example. You can’t just hit the drum. Excessively hitting the drum the wrong way could hurt your hand later on. Leading to muscle pains in your hand and the inability to separately move your fingers. To know for sure, what the right way to play or hold an instrument, you can look it up online, or find someone that plays it already. Lessons cost money, but questions are free!
Finally, when starting out an instrument, go into it with the idea that you will become a master. And with a lot of practice, you may become one. Remember to just have fun with it. And if you’re not having fun with it, odds are, that it’s just not the instrument for you!
