So far America has been the only country in the world to use nuclear bombs in war. My question is should we even have them at all? Despite the advantages of having them, nuclear warheads can create countless problems and conflicts. They also create the possible outcome of nuclear war. I decided to ask people around the school to see what they think. Should America have nuclear warheads?
This is a chart showing the number of people I asked and their responses. While it may be a small number of people polled, you can see that none of them think we should have nuclear warheads. I asked one of them to explain their reasoning.
Deirdre said “having nuclear war heads is good for control, but they kill innocent civilians.” I agree with this. While having nuclear warheads can have military and political advantages, they also come with a list of cons. Nuclear warheads kill hundreds of people and harms the environment dramatically. The first city ever to be destroyed by a nuclear bomb was Hiroshima. Countless numbers of innocent people died and many others got radiation poising.
Some scientist say that nuclear weapons are a more urgent environmental threat than global warming. Many people predict what would happen to the environment if a nuclear war breaks out. Smoke blacking out the sky would cause below-freezing temperature and a nuclear winter would begin. There would be no real winner to the war.
Even though the cold war is over a, nuclear war is still possible. More and more countries are developing nuclear weapons. Who knows, next year we could have Christmas at ground zero. Also let’s not forget we’re talking about weapons of mass destruction. Now should we get rid of America’s nuclear weapons, if so how? What do you think?
