Good Songs for Bad Days

With so much negativity in the world and so much hurt, we have to find joy in the little things. Music can be a portal of every emotion–It has the power to make you feel things and give you an outlet to express who you are. There are so many heartbreak songs out there, for good reason, because I do believe that some of the best art comes from pain. But I think there should be more appreciation for those songs that can’t help but make you smile. Here’s a playlist I put together of songs, old and new,  to listen to when you’re feeling blue or you are already having a great day and just want it to get better.

  1. Feeling Good by Nina Simone

Although not originally written by Nina, I don’t think there’s much debate that she did this song the best. Released in 1965 this is the ultimate happy song with lots of soul.

    2)    Parade by The Antlers

This relatively new song is my go-to happy song. It’s a beautiful piece all about starting anew. A very hopeful song. It’s best listened to with earbuds. You can totally get lost in the song and it’s pure joy.

    3)   Holocene by Bon Iver

This song, although it has many lyrics, I have found this it’s less lyrical and more musical. The instrumental part of the music is what gives me that rush of a happy feeling. Bon Iver has mastered his sound. Although to me this is a happy song, it can perceived in many different ways and is just overall a masterpiece.

    4)   Back In The High Life Again by Steve Winwood

It’s impossible for me to listen to this song without smiling. This 80’s classic has the power to completely lift your spirits. It’s one of those songs that makes you wanna get up on your feet and start dancing.

   5)   Dog Days Are Over by Florence + The Machine

This is a song with great lyrics and a great upbeat rhythm. It’s really all about someone who finally found their happiness. It’s got an undeniably catchy beat but also really meaningful happy lyrics when you pay close attention.

  6)   Here Comes The Sun by The Beatles

I felt like I couldn’t leave this one out of the list. The Beatles had a lot of happy upbeat songs but this one always takes the cake for me. It is so powerful in making you feel so warm inside. It’s timeless.

   7)   First Day Of My Life by Bright Eyes

This 2005 song is an incredibly cute love song but with a very happy vibe. It’s quite infectious in the way it can make someone feel. It may be a little corny but I still love to listen to it when I’m feeling good.

  8)   Wouldn’t It Be Nice by The Beach Boys

I absolutely adore this 60’s Beach Boys song. It’s a song I’ve been listening to since I was very little. Not only is it super upbeat but such a sweet and relatable love song, especially for teens.

  9)   Don’t You Forget About Me by Simple Minds

This song was made famous when it made quite appearence on the classic 80’s movie The Breakfast Club. It is played throughout the movie, but probably most memorably the ending scene. After the success of the movie, this uplifting song topped charts all over the world. People everywhere were dancing and singing along to this song. To me it’s timeless and always brings me up.

  10)  Freaking Out The Neighborhood by Mac Demarco

If you haven’t already given Mac Demarco’s music a try, I highly recommend you start now. He may not be everyone’s type but he’s my favorite artist out right now. This song in particular has an undeniably happy catchy tune that never gets old.
I hope you enjoyed some of these songs and I hope it was able to make you smile at least a little bit. Have a wonderful day 🙂
